Door-count bands

How a kitchen is priced, by the door

A sample written estimate

What the estimate looks like on paper

A medium kitchen with 31 doors and drawer fronts, as the lines would be written. Yours is written from your own count.

  • Medium kitchen, 31 doors and drawer fronts

Sample estimate, shown for the shape only.

    • Remove, number and bag hardware
    • Degrease, sand, fill and prime doors, fronts and boxes
    • Two coats on doors and fronts, sprayed flat
    • Two coats on boxes, sprayed in the kitchen
    • Re-hang, adjust, bumpers, walk-through

Hardware and a second color are written as separate lines.

A sample, not a quote or an offer.

How pricing works

Five answers before you ask

What sets the price

The number of doors and drawer fronts, the condition of the finish and the wood, whether you change color, and the style of the doors. Raised panels and glass take longer than flat ones.

What the estimate includes

Removal, prep, primer, two coats, the boxes, re-hanging and the walk-through. It lists the repairs we found and the color and sheen.

What it leaves out

New hardware, repairs to water-damaged parts, a second color and replaced doors. These are priced apart, in writing.

The visit

Kylie or Denisse comes to your kitchen, counts, tests the finish and shows you sample doors. The visit costs nothing extra and does not oblige you to hire us.

When the number comes

The written estimate arrives within a few working days of the walkthrough, with dates, a payment schedule and the warranty terms.

Price questions

Counting and paying

How do I count my doors?

Count every door and every drawer front, one by one. A cabinet with a door over a drawer is two. Skip the boxes and the toe kicks. If you are between bands, tell us the number and we will check it at the walkthrough.

Why price by the door?

Because a kitchen is a count of doors, and a count is something you can check yourself. You can tell which band you fall in before you spend an hour on the phone.

What does the price leave out?

New hardware, repairs to water-damaged or loose parts, a second color on the island, doors that are replaced instead of refinished and anything that needs a carpenter. If we find one of these at the walkthrough it is written on the estimate, so there is nothing to discover on day four.

How do I pay, and is there a deposit?

A deposit holds your dates and orders materials, the balance is due when you have walked the kitchen with us and signed off. The amounts and dates are on the written estimate; we do not start without one.

When is replacing cabinets the better choice?

When the boxes are swollen, sagging or water-damaged, when you want a new layout, or when the doors are cracked rather than worn. A refinish keeps your boxes and your layout. We will say so if replacement is the honest answer.
