Cabinet refinishing · Salt Lake City, Utah

Cabinet doors, sprayed flat and finished smooth

Forsythe Cabinet Finishing refinishes kitchen, bath and built-in cabinets. The doors ride to our spray studio on 300 West, and most kitchens are back on their hinges in five to ten working days. You count the doors; we write the price.

Door-count bands

Priced by the door

A door is a door or a drawer front. Count yours, find your band and read what is in it. The written estimate sets your price.

The week

Five to ten working days, six steps

Small kitchens run the short end of each range, large kitchens the long end. The dates are written on your estimate.

  1. Before day 101

    Count, look, choose

Kylie walks the kitchen, counts every door and drawer front, checks the boxes and tests the old finish. You pick a color from sample doors. The written estimate follows.

  2. Day 102

Mask the kitchen, take the doors

Hardware is bagged and labeled, each door is numbered by its opening, and the doors ride to the studio. The boxes are masked and the sink, stove and refrigerator stay usable.

  3. Days 2 to 303

    Degrease, sand, fill, prime

Doors are cleaned of years of cooking grease, sanded, filled where they are dented and primed on both sides in the studio. Boxes get the same treatment in place.

  4. Days 4 to 604

    Lacquer, cure, lacquer again

Doors are sprayed flat, one side at a time, with time between coats for each to dry. Flat spraying is how a door ends up without drips or brush marks.

  5. Days 7 to 805

    Boxes sprayed in your kitchen

We spray the boxes and face frames in place, with the kitchen masked and the fans running. We ask you to stay out of the kitchen that day and tell you which one.

  6. Days 9 to 1006

    Re-hang, adjust, walk through

Doors go back on their own hinges, bumpers go on, and we walk the kitchen with you. The finish keeps curing for weeks; the hand-over sheet says what to avoid until it has.

The studio

One spray studio, one person at the gun

Kylie Forsythe sprays every door that leaves this studio.

She has refinished cabinets for Salt Lake families since leaving a commercial paint crew, and the rule has not changed: doors are sprayed flat, in a booth, and nobody sprays your boxes but her or Denisse. Kaito does the prep, Connie does the schedule, and the phone is answered by one of the four of us.

  • Doors sprayed flat in the studio, not hung and brushed

  • A numbered door for every opening, so each goes home to its own hinge

  • Written estimate before the doors come off

What we refinish

Kitchens first, then everything that matches them

  1. 01

    Kitchen cabinets

Doors, drawer fronts, boxes, face frames and end panels, in a color and sheen you test on a real door.

  2. 02

    Bathroom vanities

The same count, the same flat spray. A vanity is usually one or two doors and a drawer or three.

    Vanities and built-ins
  3. 03

    Built-ins and mudrooms

Bench cubbies, window seats, pantry cabinets and shelving, sprayed to match the kitchen.

Sample reviews

From kitchens we have finished

“The doors went out on a Monday and came back Friday with hinges that closed without a bang. The boxes were masked so well I did not find a speck of dust on the counters.”

Janae T.Medium kitchen, Sugar House

“I asked for the island in a darker color than the rest. Kylie sprayed me a test door first, and we changed the sheen after seeing it in my kitchen light.”

Lilia R.Two-color kitchen, Riverton

“We counted 24 doors and fronts on the phone, Connie said we were in the medium band, and the written estimate matched the count at the walkthrough.”

Questions

Before you count

How long will my kitchen take?

Most kitchens take five to ten working days from the day the doors come off to the day they go back on. A small kitchen is at the short end, a large one at the long end. We give you the dates in writing when we price the job, and a late delivery of hardware or a repair we find can move them.

What does the price leave out?

New hardware, repairs to water-damaged or loose parts, a second color on the island, doors that are replaced instead of refinished and anything that needs a carpenter. If we find one of these at the walkthrough it is written on the estimate, so there is nothing to discover on day four.

My house was built before 1978. Does that change anything?

Yes. Federal rules for paid work that disturbs paint in homes and child-occupied buildings built before 1978 apply to every firm. We test the finish before we sand, tell you what we find and follow the lead-safe work rules the EPA sets. Our firm number is in the footer and under Credentials on the About page.

Can I use my kitchen while the doors are away?

Yes, with some patience. The boxes stay in the kitchen, masked, with the sink, stove and refrigerator working. On the days we spray the boxes we ask you to stay out of the kitchen for a day, and we tell you which days when the schedule is set.

How do I count my doors?

Count every door and every drawer front, one by one. A cabinet with a door over a drawer is two. Skip the boxes and the toe kicks. If you are between bands, tell us the number and we will check it at the walkthrough.
